Putting Lipstick On Our Strung-Out Pig

May 14th, 2009 by Allison Kilkenny

Great news, patriots! The Obama administration’s new drugs czar says he wants to banish the War on Drugs! Pack your bong! Hug a crackhead! Tell Central America to come out of hiding!

Well, maybe not just yet. The War on Drugs is still with us, but it’s probably going to have a fancy new name, sort of like how the War on Terror is now the Overseas Contingency Operation. Maybe we can call it the Columbia Reconfiguration Hug Squad, or US-Central American Care Package.

Gil Kerlikowske wants to rebrand the idea that the United States is fighting a war on drugs because fighting a war against drugs would be idiotic and a total waste of time, money, and lives. The US would probably lose a war against an irrepressible, intangible idea like terror, or freedom in the case of drugs — freedom for individuals to escape their fucked-up existences. In fact, the US has lost these wars, just as it will lose any war where its strategy is to swing wildly in the dark, while throwing handfuls of cash at nothing.

When Kerlikowske and brand Obama rename the War on Drugs, their goal should be to pick a new name that will take our minds off the fact that the government has spent $18 billion on the War on Drugs Columbia Reconfiguration Hug Squad this year alone, and counting. And that doesn’t include money spent at the state and local levels. No one seems to have a clear idea of how much the entire program has cost US taxpayers, except a lone conference of mayors that once estimated the price tag at around $40 billion a year. Now, multiply that figure by about 30 years. Yikes.

Family Guy Wishes Everyone a Happy 420

April 20th, 2009 by Manila Ryce

In celebration of today, Family Guy decided not to just make a comically neutral episode about pot, but to actually take a stand with a pro-pot episode. Kudos to Seth MacFarlane for having huge nuggets. To make the episode even better, Fox played an “Above the Influence” commercial right after it ended! Now that’s what I call… wait a minute. Is that dog talking? duuuuuuuuude. Oh my God, I’m tripping. The baby’s talking now. Oh man.

Stoners Did Something! Kellogg’s Ranked Lower After Dropping Phelps

February 26th, 2009 by Manila Ryce

Kellogg’s brand reputation has suffered significantly after the company announced it would not renew its endorsement contract with Michael Phelps because he likes to smoke a little herb. Out of the 5,600 company reputations Vanno monitors, Kellogg ranked 9th before it came out against potheads. Now it’s ranked 83. Not even an industry-wide peanut scare inflicted as much damage on the food company’s reputation!

There Will Be Bud

May 25th, 2008 by Manila Ryce

Despite being based off such a stupid pun, the There Will Be Bud video from Brain Spray Media is actually a pretty brilliant parody. Judging from the level of production that went into this thing I think it’s safe to say this is the greatest project a group of potheads has ever completed. Well, right behind the pyramids. That’s right, the aliens who made the pyramids loved reefer.

The Real News - Obama and Reverend Wright

March 20th, 2008 by Manila Ryce

The Real News talks to Davey D, a Hip-Hop historian, journalist, community activist, and one of the hosts of Hard Knock Radio on KPFA in San Francisco and other Pacifica stations.

God bless The Real News for being the only media source with the integrity to look at both the unfair media coverage of Reverend Wright’s comments and their following infatuation with Obama’s “race speech,” which denounced Wright’s truthfulness. While Obama’s speech has been praised as a flawless handjob for the corporate media pundits, the line regarding American foreign policy, which I saw as unforgivably disturbing and ignorant on Tuesday, is actually brought up as something of significance by The Real News. I have yet to see any other news source give mention to that line.

So now that Obama’s made amends with everyone who was scared shitless that an angry black man like Wright would be associated with their harmless black candidate, do you think there’s any chance Obama will now make amends with the Muslim community for blaming violence in the Middle East on Islam rather than the human rights violations and dictatorial rule we’ve supported there for decades? It’s not what you say anymore, it’s how you say it. The truth is unacceptable when it challenges the capitalist power structure, but lies are to be praised when they oppress a group with little political power. That’s why Watergate is so important to Americans while Cointelpro is forgotten history. Obama’s just another puppet with a new face and white liberals can’t get enough.

Better Know a Lobby – The Drug Lobby

March 14th, 2008 by Manila Ryce

Drug trafficking and enforcement is big business for the government, as is the prison industrial complex it feeds. Like all wars in recent history, the “war on drugs” is merely another way to oppress the masses while accelerating wealth upwards to the few who benefit from its continuation.

New Vending Machines Take Plastic, but Give Nickels and Dimes

January 31st, 2008 by Manila Ryce

Hey rest of the country, jealous much? This is quite brilliant. Pot vending machines will create a demand for the munchies. Put a normal vending machine next to one that dispenses pot and people won’t have a reason to go home.
