What Obama is Hiding: By Geraldine Sealey

May 23rd, 2009 by Manila Ryce

After Donald Rumsfeld testified on the Hill about Abu Ghraib in May, there was talk of more photos and video in the Pentagon’s custody more horrific than anything made public so far. “If these are released to the public, obviously it’s going to make matters worse,” Rumsfeld said. Since then, the Washington Post has disclosed some new details and images of abuse at the prison. But if Seymour Hersh is right, it all gets much worse.

Hersh gave a speech last week to the ACLU making the charge that children were sodomized in front of women in the prison, and the Pentagon has tape of it. The speech was first reported in a New York Sun story last week, which was in turn posted on Jim Romenesko’s media blog, and now EdCone.com and other blogs are linking to the video. We transcribed the critical section here (it starts at about 1:31:00 into the ACLU video.) At the start of the transcript here, you can see how Hersh was struggling over what he should say:

“Debating about it, ummm … Some of the worst things that happened you don’t know about, okay? Videos, um, there are women there. Some of you may have read that they were passing letters out, communications out to their men. This is at Abu Ghraib … The women were passing messages out saying ‘Please come and kill me, because of what’s happened’ and basically what happened is that those women who were arrested with young boys, children in cases that have been recorded. The boys were sodomized with the cameras rolling. And the worst above all of that is the soundtrack of the boys shrieking that your government has. They are in total terror. It’s going to come out.”

“It’s impossible to say to yourself how did we get there? Who are we? Who are these people that sent us there? When I did My Lai I was very troubled like anybody in his right mind would be about what happened. I ended up in something I wrote saying in the end I said that the people who did the killing were as much victims as the people they killed because of the scars they had, I can tell you some of the personal stories by some of the people who were in these units witnessed this. I can also tell you written complaints were made to the highest officers and so we’re dealing with a enormous massive amount of criminal wrongdoing that was covered up at the highest command out there and higher, and we have to get to it and we will. We will. You know there’s enough out there, they can’t (Applause). …. So it’s going to be an interesting election year.”

Notes from a similar speech Hersh gave in Chicago in June were posted on Brad DeLong’s blog. Rick Pearlstein, who watched the speech, wrote: “[Hersh] said that after he broke Abu Ghraib people are coming out of the woodwork to tell him this stuff. He said he had seen all the Abu Ghraib pictures. He said, ‘You haven’t begun to see evil…’ then trailed off. He said, ‘horrible things done to children of women prisoners, as the cameras run.’ He looked frightened.”

So, there are several questions here: Has Hersh actually seen the video he described to the ACLU, and why hasn’t he written about it yet? Will he be forced to elaborate in more public venues now that these two speeches are getting so much attention, at least in the blogosphere? And who else has seen the video, if it exists — will journalists see and report on it? did senators see these images when they had their closed-door sessions with the Abu Ghraib evidence? — and what is being done about it?

(Update: A reader brought to our attention that the rape of boys at Abu Ghraib has been mentioned in some news accounts of the prisoner abuse evidence. The Telegraph and other news organizations described “a videotape, apparently made by US personnel, is said to show Iraqi guards raping young boys.” The Guardian reported “formal statements by inmates published yesterday describe horrific treatment at the hands of guards, including the rape of a teenage Iraqi boy by an army translator.”)

I too had been deliberately ignoring this made up controversy but The Daily Show did such a good piece on it I thought I’d finally post something. I support marriage equality, but hearing a model who’s being judged on the appearance of her plastic body admit that she doesn’t think the same way I do doesn’t get me angry. Actually, it’s pretty reassuring when someone like that disagrees with you. What does get me angry is the fact that anyone would make her relevant in the first place. The very concept of such a contest angers me, as do self-described liberals who legitimize that contest by allowing it to have any power over them. Why not ask Flavor Flav his opinion on budget cuts and then feign outrage over his answers too?

Perhaps Democratic bloggers are creating enemies because they don’t think they have any real battles left now that they’re in the majority, but transforming this bimbo from a passing thought in the mind of a sweaty teenage boy into a Focus on the Family spokesperson is counterproductive. This girl was not an advocate. She had no power until large segments of the Left and gay community gave it to her. Additionally, if you’re for freedom of speech then you’re for it specifically for statements you find repulsive. Not only have these idiots given her more airtime for her views on this topic, but the rabid way they’ve done it makes the rest of us who actually do care about equality look like petty fascists. Way to go.

Nov 15th Protest to Overturn Prop 8

November 17th, 2008 by Manila Ryce

This is just part of the crowd which showed up in Los Angeles on Saturday November 15th to protest the injustice and state-sanctioned bigotry of prop 8. The protest, which drew a crowd of over 20,000 people, was coordinated with events in other cities across the country and is thought to be the largest pro-LGBT rally in Los Angeles’ history. Protesters stood in the searing heat for two hours in front of Los Angeles City Hall to hear several speakers before embarking on their march through the city.

Hallmark Now Making Gay Wedding Cards

August 22nd, 2008 by Manila Ryce

This is a pretty significant societal marker. Now gay couples can join the rest of us in expressing their love with store-bought, commoditized affection

Hallmark added the cards after California joined Massachusetts as the only U.S. states with legal gay marriage. A handful of other states have recognized same-sex civil unions.

The language inside the cards is neutral, with no mention of wedding or marriage, making them also suitable for a commitment ceremony. Hallmark says the move is a response to consumer demand, not any political pressure.

“It’s our goal to be as relevant as possible to as many people as we can,” Hallmark spokeswoman Sarah Gronberg Kolell said.

Hallmark’s largest competitor, American Greetings Corp., has no plans to enter the market, saying its current offerings are general enough to speak to a lot of different relationships.

Hallmark started offering “coming out” cards last year, and the four designs of same-sex marriage cards are being gradually released this summer and will be widely available by next year. No sales figures were available yet.

Ernest Borgnine Masturbates… a lot

August 15th, 2008 by Manila Ryce

How ironic. I was actually masturbating to Fox & Friends when this happened. Who knew the secret to a long life was in my hands all along?

Immediately after it was revealed that Borgnine has an almost superhuman commitment to masturbation, his Wikipedia page was updated. I took this screencap in case it changes.

In Defense of Mr. T

August 2nd, 2008 by Manila Ryce

Wayne Besen seems like a nice enough guy, so it really sucks that I have to hate him now for making me agree with O’Reilly. What did I ever do to you Wayne?

In explaining human sexuality as existing more along a widely varied spectrum than as something definable by two rigid options, Gore Vidal once said, “there are no homosexual people, only homosexual acts”. For Mr. T to be homophobic by Vidal’s standard, speed-walking would need to be a homosexual act. Besen sees the speed-walker in this video as gay, but why? Because he’s moving his hips in an effeminate manner? Writing off effeminate men as being gay is the same homophobic connection straight people are often guilty of making.

Attributing certain mannerisms and characteristics to a sexual preference is where we run into problems. Granted, it’s clear that Mr. T is targeting effeminate men, but effeminate does not equal gay. Arguing in such a manner-of-fact manner that this caricature must be gay only serves to reinforce stereotypes. As noble as his intentions are, I do believe it is here where Besen does more harm to his cause than good.

Despite evidence of sexual orientation being genetic, Vidal is essentially correct in assessing sexuality itself as a spectrum. Sure, many gay men are effeminate, but so are many straight men. Spend 30 minutes browsing the emo kids on MySpace if you doubt me. It’s the mannerisms of the speed-walker which Mr. T is trying to “correct”, and though that still may not be a positive message, it certainly doesn’t seem like a gay specific prejudice. Effeminate mannerisms are the clear target here, so the sexual preference of the walker is not something you can be so bold as to assume without basing them on stereotypes yourself. Speed walking is fucking ridiculous, and fortunately for the gay community, it’s not something most people would identify with homosexuals.

If anything, I’ve always found that the line between homo and hetero blurs more heavily towards the masculine end of the spectrum than towards the feminine end. For example, what’s gayer than wrestling, the military, boy scouts, prison, bodybuilding, or anything else considered macho? Hell, look at Mr. T himself. The guy wears jewelry and muscle shirts. In fact, we may be witnessing the very first televised scene of gay-on-gay crime. Now that’s progress!
